For touring, the rim brakes work out fine. Touring riding is often gentle riding and most stopping is anticipated. I even prefer the rim brakes over disk brakes for touring. The rim brakes are much easier to replace pads and adjust while on the road. <p></p>
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/k6ol0XMHaWU?si=Qsr6pyAiYEQ0Pq6I" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><div><br /></div><div>Having a pedal assist system smooths out those long hills and keeps older riders on the road. On level roads, most of miles tick away with little or no peddle assist at a nice and normal touring speed... okay, slow. <br />But if a faster pace is needed to cover move ground, a small amount of assist (usually less than 100w) can bring the speed up by a few miles per hour. <br />I use two small identical batteries for touring. This works. <br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigYBl3Cf1i6PYrSe2C_i4neqwqWEv8kTvf7d2276CY_sVqIC2g7fRpx_dIG1eHRa4X_erW_KKQZWYz9730ak2FT7-PIO32SfK2VQU85BQCmZ3GZ3-oeG9nv2Ct0zEAiloSCB4Q8E-sejKGnoXqFPN6WyUY_gfCTfx4doarRpr0m_mH3oITP18Mag/s320/Hailong%20Battery.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="285" data-original-width="320" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigYBl3Cf1i6PYrSe2C_i4neqwqWEv8kTvf7d2276CY_sVqIC2g7fRpx_dIG1eHRa4X_erW_KKQZWYz9730ak2FT7-PIO32SfK2VQU85BQCmZ3GZ3-oeG9nv2Ct0zEAiloSCB4Q8E-sejKGnoXqFPN6WyUY_gfCTfx4doarRpr0m_mH3oITP18Mag/w200-h178/Hailong%20Battery.png" width="200" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">as pictured in advertisement</span></i></td></tr></tbody></table><br /> </div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>I attach it to the Long Haul Trucker with a bungee cord on the rear rack.</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>With normal use, I can ride about 35-40 miles with each battery. I rotate the batteries while riding and place the unused battery in the pannier. When I stop for a break, the small battery and small charger are easily carried in a store or restaurant to have a "top off charge" while I take a break. With age, these "breaks" are becoming a more enjoyable part of touring. I have stopped in bicycle shops and ask if I can charge my battery while I explore their town for a short time - (<i>Always a good idea buy those needed items at the shop when doing this</i>). This is when having the multiple batteries really come in handy. </div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;"><b>Daily Use</b></h3><div>When not touring, the <b>Surly Long Haul Trucker </b>E-Bike conversion is great to use for commuting or errands and shopping. With the multiple battery options, you can just take one small battery to do the trip, no need to haul around a large battery. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>If you have a older quality bicycle that fits you well, an E-Bike conversion might be right for you.</div><div><br /></div><div>Read about the conversion process <a href="https://www.e-biketouring.com/p/surly-long-haul-trucker-e-bike.html">HERE</a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8648693962857794373.post-46769089139701622572023-09-30T17:35:00.004-06:002023-09-30T17:45:57.936-06:00 Di-Electric grease - Bafang ERROR 21H<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">On the Bafang controller, the ERROR 21H <br />Controller Report Error <br />code may result while riding. </span> </p><p>The issue that may you may have is the Bafang system powers off after a few minutes. <br />Powering it back up, will allow the pedal assist to continue, however the <i><span style="font-size: large;">s</span><span style="font-size: medium;">peed</span><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></i>will not display and the <i><span style="font-size: medium;">mileage</span></i> will not increase on the computer display. The sensor magnet may have come out of position or the wiring had become faulty. <br /></p><div style="text-align: center;"><i>(It could also be a motor controller failure or bad speed sensor). </i></div><p></p><p>But most likely, the issue is the magnet on the wheel spoke is out of position. Check the magnet for the positioning so that the magnet passes by the speed sensor. Wipe the magnet and speed sensor off in case there has been a build up of mud or dirt that is keeping the magnet from triggering the sensor as it passes. </p><p>In case of an <b>electric malfunction</b>, an application of <span style="font-size: medium;">di-electric grease</span> on all of the electric connections can quickly the resolve electric connection issues. Disconnect the speed sensor wire connection and apply the di-electric grease in both ends of the connector and reconnect. If you are riding on dusty trails, the dust may have went into the electric connection and stopped the electrical circuit. The di-electric grease will resolve the issue. </p><p>The same issue has happened on a Shimano Steps e-bike I was servicing. The application of di-electric grease in the wire connections immediately resolved the Shimano Steps systems error codes. <br /><br />It is a good idea the put di-electric grease in all of the e-bike connections. </p><p><br /></p><p>✅<span style="font-size: medium;">Having a small tube of dielectric grease in your bicycle tool kit is highly recommended. </span></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8648693962857794373.post-42637238794493546522023-08-18T14:30:00.001-06:002023-08-18T15:44:06.348-06:00Time to take a break!<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhvfwxNCAHc9VFeuFxIheUwIh04z7HDqdGJ6bvUNjQDtoxr8K32HYzykgYKU36YLY2NsukcqEfbw6j7WWcJxB4adlDvi6w8r3Jf8TvhLKnBnsFMU1i1GOWDYTLijxvdMjCZOq0hazvpi8Ec7PvWAHyyCSRJqeqLbc7qJR1g2p6VgVw6p_HHk27KvSkx"><img alt="" border="0" height="640" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_7268762512796875986" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhvfwxNCAHc9VFeuFxIheUwIh04z7HDqdGJ6bvUNjQDtoxr8K32HYzykgYKU36YLY2NsukcqEfbw6j7WWcJxB4adlDvi6w8r3Jf8TvhLKnBnsFMU1i1GOWDYTLijxvdMjCZOq0hazvpi8Ec7PvWAHyyCSRJqeqLbc7qJR1g2p6VgVw6p_HHk27KvSkx=w480-h640" width="480" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">It really didn't feel too bad at 14 mph</span></div> Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8648693962857794373.post-10699113957645898952023-07-21T11:48:00.005-06:002023-07-21T11:52:22.850-06:00dielectric grease<p> On dusty trails, watch for dust buildup around the speed sensor and dust in the wire connectors if an E-Bike is being used. </p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEimMwkkuDhC6ht4V2BUs4skd_3CQmXhS5KcdzwAWiO7zl0f51qHI49lWkiQh7gvdfu_Rrxx-iu2wwOFpgIta7z-9myvAkpZxb9hFqck_tE-oJEad-AyLdv41nmcMBcnGEsJqPcaiFwCqjjM0NA0FmdE9W8ujeLIFUhGFx0E6VgZYMHioc6gRx5wq4Fp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1008" data-original-width="756" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEimMwkkuDhC6ht4V2BUs4skd_3CQmXhS5KcdzwAWiO7zl0f51qHI49lWkiQh7gvdfu_Rrxx-iu2wwOFpgIta7z-9myvAkpZxb9hFqck_tE-oJEad-AyLdv41nmcMBcnGEsJqPcaiFwCqjjM0NA0FmdE9W8ujeLIFUhGFx0E6VgZYMHioc6gRx5wq4Fp=w300-h400" width="300" /></a> </p><p>In case of an electric malfunction, a cleaning of the speed sensor unit and magnet followed by an application of dielectric grease on all of the electric connections can quickly resolve electric connection issues. </p><p>✅Having a small tube of dielectric grease in your bicycle tool kit is highly recommended. </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8648693962857794373.post-71899013973587622692023-07-18T15:25:00.005-06:002023-07-19T12:14:54.504-06:00On the hot ride ! I Converted a Surly Long Haul Trucker September 2022 and started the testing and the made refinements. </div><div><br /></div><div><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">You can read about the conversion in the link at the top.</span></i></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>At this point, the bicycle is dialed in really good for my needs. There were some needed and highly recommended changes that were made along the testing way. But overall, I would HIGHLY recommend converting an existing comfortable bicycle to an e-bike as opposed to purchasing a new e-bike that may have specific motor mount frames and proprietary batteries. </div><div><br /></div><div>A conversion lets you put together the type of bicycle with the functions that best fit you. </div><div><br /></div><div>Probably the best thing I like about conversions is the choice of batteries. </div><div><br /></div><div><i>Range Anxiety</i></div><div>If most of your bicycle trips are under 30 miles, but you concerned with range, on specific occassions, there is really no need to mount a huge, heavy and expensive battery that can give you a range of 80 miles, . A small battery will do just fine for the short trips For those times more range is needed, you can have 2 or three small batteries and toss them into a pannier and swap them out when needed. Other wise, why haul around all the extra weight of a huge battery that takes up space. The rides to the grocery store or other errands are much easier with a small battery not taking up much space and being that heavy. ALSO if one battery 'goes bad' which I have never had happen but know that it can, your e-bike is not out of service while you are awaiting a new battery. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div> Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8648693962857794373.post-21077215466230503722023-06-07T13:18:00.005-06:002023-06-13T12:29:40.696-06:00Vittoria Randonneur Tires after 1,000 loaded miles<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9lqZk1DULpc8snb6mN9jmNApLVFLzPvUNd0kWxH0hGaCUJ5Bsx4S6VTJrGLmF5ryLoaQQI1jOS4xfsn5d0OEE42N0aWhiwCGt4SPgKrswhfFBoIpHB7tTUEIPm8EUC7_bfTemk9RVcQ9aq1Jr1xdyc2FutgdYLntsbQoN3MecKvh7G_xTwJOTZA/s4002/IMG-1325.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9lqZk1DULpc8snb6mN9jmNApLVFLzPvUNd0kWxH0hGaCUJ5Bsx4S6VTJrGLmF5ryLoaQQI1jOS4xfsn5d0OEE42N0aWhiwCGt4SPgKrswhfFBoIpHB7tTUEIPm8EUC7_bfTemk9RVcQ9aq1Jr1xdyc2FutgdYLntsbQoN3MecKvh7G_xTwJOTZA/s4002/IMG-1325.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1626" data-original-width="4002" height="130" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9lqZk1DULpc8snb6mN9jmNApLVFLzPvUNd0kWxH0hGaCUJ5Bsx4S6VTJrGLmF5ryLoaQQI1jOS4xfsn5d0OEE42N0aWhiwCGt4SPgKrswhfFBoIpHB7tTUEIPm8EUC7_bfTemk9RVcQ9aq1Jr1xdyc2FutgdYLntsbQoN3MecKvh7G_xTwJOTZA/s320/IMG-1325.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiicRUpbNYVaAo3l5nt8qxQswmDvQnrG4ETJsq2fHFN-HXxzopY3-E5IbZbOKm7fOky5z4vXnDyfGaY9SLsGHsd8WK6ZPiLIrZS9ClBB8p4W67slMFrVFQA8GjpnwaI7oaDAbUWFFtfCfIXKg7jYz5jJ1_2uV2FrH4GlT2G6gHcBrevpepocH_WcQ/s4032/IMG-1319.jpg" style="display: inline; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiicRUpbNYVaAo3l5nt8qxQswmDvQnrG4ETJsq2fHFN-HXxzopY3-E5IbZbOKm7fOky5z4vXnDyfGaY9SLsGHsd8WK6ZPiLIrZS9ClBB8p4W67slMFrVFQA8GjpnwaI7oaDAbUWFFtfCfIXKg7jYz5jJ1_2uV2FrH4GlT2G6gHcBrevpepocH_WcQ/w150-h200/IMG-1319.jpg" width="150" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9PuFsyGrS9t6YTQil1s1k1AmyxI1Uvwo9Y1MmA4XVZRJhkLs_KjtxR4WfqibVHSuD7VQKLNzRev362JUC-SFzNtSwghIdnEFmhudvElbP-pyuV0RBzVR_B1jqkIw-4iGjvNSXQJ29LSSE6WlvuxWxymcZI9xgdLC9-0ltONLxL7vfq8NOaScP-Q/s3873/IMG-1321.jpg" style="clear: left; display: inline; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3873" data-original-width="2661" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9PuFsyGrS9t6YTQil1s1k1AmyxI1Uvwo9Y1MmA4XVZRJhkLs_KjtxR4WfqibVHSuD7VQKLNzRev362JUC-SFzNtSwghIdnEFmhudvElbP-pyuV0RBzVR_B1jqkIw-4iGjvNSXQJ29LSSE6WlvuxWxymcZI9xgdLC9-0ltONLxL7vfq8NOaScP-Q/w138-h200/IMG-1321.jpg" width="138" /></a><span style="text-align: right;"> </span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3HT9JrKlGjM3tb6e2enugMyO0UUDSSnw4e9yRLkFXBi2Suqvznlvh_Fbt9G_7IvDUCP1Ppe-4VVil2bD9vuXcm2NLyLgZVErb6_EkjSUJ7kQtbgJ3w2Q7E3h0RlLeSOPvSh-XO3hqMWTojhTKtsV0Ii1Z8Mtc55jZZi0ZYXu-tozMtAm0vCx91w/s997/IMG-1326.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><img border="0" data-original-height="997" data-original-width="619" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3HT9JrKlGjM3tb6e2enugMyO0UUDSSnw4e9yRLkFXBi2Suqvznlvh_Fbt9G_7IvDUCP1Ppe-4VVil2bD9vuXcm2NLyLgZVErb6_EkjSUJ7kQtbgJ3w2Q7E3h0RlLeSOPvSh-XO3hqMWTojhTKtsV0Ii1Z8Mtc55jZZi0ZYXu-tozMtAm0vCx91w/w124-h200/IMG-1326.jpg" width="124" /> </a></div></div><br /><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">These tires ride smoothly and in the 1,000 miles I have had ZERO flats ! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />I do NOT like to get flat tires while riding fully loaded and in the heat of the summer. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A handy feature is they have a Red Color Indicator to let you know when you need to replace them. <br />It takes the guesswork out of the process, and is hard to miss. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The tire in the picture is for the rear tire.
